It was 26 days until I finished my undergraduate career at the University of Alaska Anchorage, and I had no plans for the summer. After being in school for 16 years, I had no idea what it meant not to be a student and was terrified to go out into the “real world.” I had applied to multiple jobs and internships, but none of them seemed to be the right fit. When I stumbled upon the job posting for an internship at APCM for the summer, it felt like all of the puzzle pieces of what I wanted to do came together; I would be able to put my education and work experience to the test. I nervously applied for the position and was thankfully selected as one of the two interns for the summer. I am now in my third week here, and I could not be more excited.
My name is Arina Filippenko, and I am a lifelong Alaskan (okay, almost lifelong); I graduated from West Anchorage High School in 2014 and from UAA this spring. I just completed two Bachelor’s degrees, a BBA in Management with a concentration in Property Management and Real Estate and a BBA in Finance. My education was supplemented heavily with on and off-campus involvement. I was a member of the UAA Seawolf Debate Team, USUAA Student Government, and UAA Concert Board. Off-campus, I have had the opportunity to serve on the board of the non-profit, Spirit of Youth, for just over two years. I believe my background has prepared me well for the position at APCM, as it has required me to develop strengths in critical thinking, public speaking, and creative problem solving.
To say that I hit the ground running with this summer internship would be an understatement. The amount of information I learned within just the first week was tremendous and very fulfilling. From analyzing bond portfolios to preparing for meetings with clients, I can truly say that I have been fully immersed into the operations of APCM. I’ve already had the opportunity to begin to learn how to use software such as MoneyGuidePro, Salentica, and Bloomberg. I feel like I am finally able to understand how to place the theories I learned in the classroom into real-world applications daily. The staff at APCM are some of the friendliest and most helpful individuals that I have had the opportunity to interact with; everyone is always willing to help guide me and answer questions whenever they may arise.
What I seek to gain from my internship at APCM is a well-rounded understanding of the inner-workings of a financial services company, as well as have a platform to hone my skills. I hope to be able to combine my affinity for spreadsheets and data analysis with my interest in creative problem solving with all tasks. I am thrilled to be working at APCM, and I look forward to all that is to come this summer.
